साबुन के अणु का आयनिक (कार्बोक्सिलेट) सिरा जलरागी होता है और लंबी हाइड्रोकार्बन पूँछ जलविरागी होती है। इसी कारण यह तैलीय मैल के चारों ओर मिसेल बनाता है।
A soap molecule has an ionic (carboxylate) head that is hydrophilic and a long hydrocarbon tail that is hydrophobic. This lets it form micelles around oily dirt.
